Please join us for an intimate virtual conversation with award-winning author, performer, and documentary filmmaker, Tim Z. Hernandez (El Paso, Texas) at our next Beyond the Clock, which will take place on Tuesday, May 12th from 4 – 5 PM CT.
In this conversation, Tim will invite us into a deeper exploration of memory, storytelling, and the tension between rest and responsibility in this moment. We’ll reflect on what it means to carry stories across generations, to create spaces of refuge and inspiration in times that feel relentless, and to release the pressure of constant translation, especially in rooms where we can finally be fully ourselves.
Tim will also share about stepping into documentary filmmaking as a new and vulnerable medium, and how his current project seeks not to polarize, but to open dialogue and connection within and across communities. This gathering is an invitation to pause, to be nurtured, and to remember that rest, too, is part of the work.
Tim Z. Hernandez's work includes fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, and he is the recipient of the American Book Award, and the International Latino Book Award. His work has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, C-Span, NPR’s Latino USA, and many others. In 2018 he was recognized by the California Senate for his research on locating the victims of the 1948 plane wreck at Los Gatos Canyon, the incident made famous by Woody Guthrie’s song of the same name, which is chronicled in his books, All They Will Call You, and the sequel, They Call You Back.
Hernandez holds an M.F.A. from Bennington College, and a B.A. from Naropa University, and he is an Associate Professor with the University of Texas El Paso’s Bilingual Creative Writing program. He lives in El Paso, Texas with his two children. You can find more info at www.timzhernandez.com
