River Valley Ripple: A Season of Creativity and Connection
As we reflect on another season of the River Valley Ripple (RVR) Artist Residency, The YES! House Program Director Luwaina Al-Otaibi shares her reflections on the past year of the program. From watching artists deepen their creative practices to seeing new connections and collaborations take shape, Luwaina reflects on what made this season of RVR especially meaningful and the ways the program continues to grow.
This year, we welcomed four River Valley Ripple (RVR) artists-in-residence to The YES! House for two weeks of focused time to dedicate to their art, free from the daily distractions of their regular routines. We hosted a poet, two musicians, and a video game creator, and each artist planned and hosted a public artist salon at the end of their residency, giving them the opportunity to share their work with the community. This year definitely did not disappoint!
It has been so rewarding to watch these artists grow in confidence, vision, and creative process throughout their residencies. They are able to take time, with limited guidance from us, to step deeper into their art form in a way they may not otherwise be able to without a space like The YES! House. A couple of this year’s artists performed their work on stage for the first time during our open mic nights, then went on to apply for this residency and host an event of their very own!
Another thing I have loved seeing grow is the collaborative spirit of this program. Current RVR artists have worked with other local artists, including former RVR artists, during their residencies to incorporate their work into their projects. I have seen that spirit of artistic support for RVR artists grow organically within the program. Former RVR artists live nearby and are always excited to get involved, share their talents, and support the artists currently in residence.
This year was also the first time we invited former RVR artists to attend our end-of-season gathering. It was wonderful to give them all time to share their experiences, exchange ideas, and reconnect! I know they will continue to create, collaborate, and support one another for years to come.
I am so excited to see which talented Southwest Minnesota artists we will be able to uplift in 2027!
As we close out another season of River Valley Ripple, we’re grateful for the artists, collaborators, and community members who continue to make this program possible. We’re already looking ahead and excited to see which talented Southwest Minnesota artists will join us for the next season of RVR!
